Ramping it up - Makers of skateboard ramps have their roots in Huntington Beach!

When OC Ramps opened:
We started building ramps originally in 1997 (in Huntington Beach), but we didn't incorporate the business until February of 2005. We start doing online sales in June of 2005.

Describe your business:
It's a skate ramp manufacturing company. We build and sell, online, wooden skateboard ramps for residential use.

Where did the idea for your business come from?
Originally my little brother (Tyler) and father built a ramp back in 1997 using plans from a magazine, and it just escalated from there. Neighbors in the area wanted ramps, so we started building them locally for people in Huntington Beach. And then Tyler came up with the idea of selling them online and shipping them all over the United States.

What made you want to get into this business?
We started building skateboard ramps for fun, and as more people purchased them we decided to build it. We thought: "Hey, why not have a business doing something that we love?" So the demand brought it to us, but it's something we enjoy.

What makes your business unique?
One of the unique things that sets us apart in our industry as far as other skate ramp companies is that our prices include free shipping. So the prices that you see are the prices you pay to have it delivered right to your home. Nationwide there are only a couple that are as big a company as we are. We are the largest wooden skateboard ramp manufacturers for residential use in the nation.

How are you marketing yourselves?

Internet sales. We advertise through Google. We have a Web optimizer that helps us with our rankings on search engines, and we advertise in a number of skateboard and skateboard-accessories search engines. And we also advertise in several of the skateboarding magazines.

Do you ship internationally?
We have shipped to South Africa, China and Canada. There's an additional charge outside of 48 states. We have shipped to Alaska and Hawaii several times.

What do you want to accomplish with your business?
For us, this is our dream to build it up from scratch. You can see it on the photos on our walls: we just made them out of the garage. It was a dream to build it up as big as it is and become the nation's largest distributor of skateboarding ramps. Building ramps and how we designed it was almost a father-son project. The first ramp we built was with our father. Our dad was a self-made business man and an entrepreneur, and he passed away when I (Brandon) was 22 and Tyler only 14. I think our dad would be proud. … It's just kind of a neat self-accomplishment to be where we are right now and look at how far we've come.
